Career Journeys @ AusGroup

Angelo Demarte - Workshop Super - 22 years with AusGroup

Angelo Demarte has seen much of the AusGroup evolution. Starting with AusGroup as a boilermaker in 2000 and now a Workshop Superintendent at the Kwinana fabrication and maintenance facility, Angelo is one of AusGroup’s longest serving employees and has his own explanations for the company’s longevity.

“It’s a workplace that’s built around people. We have a real culture of teamwork, and that includes the AusGroup team and our clients, working together. We’re all focused on getting work done safely, on time, and on budget.”

When Angelo started with AusGroup the maintenance and fabrication facilities were small and many of its quality procedures were manual. Now, barcoding, scanning and online quality assurance tools have automated many internal processes, resulting in greater efficiencies, improved safety, and better outcomes for clients.

“We definitely have automated a lot of our processes which has made it easier for us to do our jobs. Our AG Fab program makes our fabrication work much more seamless than it used to be. It all goes towards giving a better quality solution for our clients and gives us the confidence and the knowledge that we can build absolutely anything”.

Angelo also believes that the AusGroup culture of integrity and courage has served it well. “We’re really lucky to have a leadership team that values every staff member equally, regardless of their position. We’re all encouraged to have a voice and sometimes it’s the suggestions and ideas that even our newest staff members have that are the best and that change how we go about things.”

Angelo believes this feeds into the wider AusGroup commitment to the highest safety standards and to its culture of continuous improvement. “We recognise people all the time for the work they do well, and so we’re all focused together on doing the best job we can and on doing things better where we can. I think we’re quite unique in that way.”

Over his 10-year career at AusGroup, Alex has seized every opportunity presented to him in his various roles which has resulted in a solid career progression, from an apprentice Boilermaker at AusGroup’s Kwinana Operations to Business Development Manager at the West Perth offices.

Descended from a long line of boilermakers in his family, he never thought he would make it into a white-collar role.  His skills at boiler making were evident in his apprenticeship when he was chosen to represent WA in the national Weld Skills Competition, with the WA team securing 5th place overall from 16 teams from across Australia.

Alex attributes his success at AusGroup to the mentoring he received from his supervisors when he was an apprentice, including Angelo Demarte, who always encouraged and supported him to strive for personal growth and to stretch himself in his work, regularly giving him the hardest projects or most challenging clients.

These opportunities were presented to Alex regularly in his early days at AusGroup, which meant his skills grew quickly and he was rewarded with Project Engineer and Project Management roles on some of AusGroup’s largest fabrication project, which included leading the fabrication and construction teams on the World’s largest on-rail Reclaimer 3-year construction project.

The diversity of projects and the family environment at AusGroup have been important to Alex thoughout his career journey to date which has recently included securing a Business Development Manager role, based out of the West Perth offices.  In his project management role in Kwinana, Alex thrived on being involved in project execution, from commencing the fabrication and construction, through to seeing it delivered and installed on site.  The BDM role takes that a step further and he is now involved in actually securing that work for the business.

Looking into the future, Alex looks forward to the next stage of his career at AusGroup with his career aspiration set on a further management roles within AusGroup.

He encourages everyone to choose a career with AusGroup because of the opportunities to grow within the business and the supportive team culture that fosters continuous personal development.

Ruben Phelps is an apprentice mechanical fitter at AusGroup based in Onslow, on the Wheatstone Project.  He has been with the business for two years now and was recently been awarded with the Apprentice of the Year award at the Onslow Chamber of Commerce 2022 Awards.

Ruben was nominated for the award by AusGroup because his resilience, teamwork, and quest to learn on the job and at TAFE is putting him on a pathway to being an excellent tradesperson. Feedback from teammates, Chevron as the client, and TAFE lecturers is consistently very positive and common themes are Ruben’s CARING ATTITUDE, STRONG WORK ETHIC, WILLINGNESS TO LEARN and RELIABILITY. In essence if you were building a team – Ruben would be one of your first choices!

Since July 2020, we have witnessed tremendous growth in Ruben’s confidence, maturity, people skills and the development of an engaging communication style.

Whilst he comes across as laid back and relaxed, he has always had an incredible work ethic and sense of family responsibility making him a popular and valued team member. Ruben has an excellent ability to learn new information, is quick to learn and genuinely values the time experienced teammates afford him so that his on the job skills have grown consistently.

If you ask Ruben, he feels that the supportive environment at AusGroup, from his supervisors, mentors and work mates have been the back bone of his continuous improvement in the role and he would recommend AusGroup as an employer of choice because of this.
